General Information
about Childhood Cancer
In the U.S. there are 8,400
new cases of cancer each year in children between the ages of newborn and
fourteen. Of these, there are 1,400 deaths. One third of those deaths are
from Leukemia. The two major causes of cancer in children are leukemia
and brain cancer. One statistic that is amazing is that there is a significant
number of young adults, under the age of nineteen who get uterine or ovarian
cancer, and also who get prostate or testicular cancer. Some cancer treatments
last over three years. Often surgical procedures and extensive rehabilitation
are necessary. Often the parents need to put their careers and jobs on
hold in order to give the support necessary to their children who are undergoing
treatment. In most cases, teenagers who are going through chemotherapy
cannot work during the summers to save money for college.
