The The Stephen T. Marchello Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation that gives scholarships to current year High School Graduates in the states of AZ, CA, CO, and MT who have survived childhood cancer. 2005 Scholarship Recipients
Grant Weaver, a graduate of Arapahoe High School in Centennial, CO, was awarded a four year $10,000 scholarship. He will be attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. Grant worked at the UCHSC research center during high school and plans to pursue cancer research as a career. He was chosen to be a member of Link Crew, a select group of juniors and seniors who mentor freshman and new students. Grant was diagnosed with brain cancer in Oct. 2002, during his sophomore year of high school.
Mikaela Berglund, a graduate of Crested Butte Academy in Crested Butte, CO, was awarded a one time grant of $3,500. She is attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO, majoring in Nursing. Mikaela was captain of her high school Cross Country Team, was on the Snowboard Team, and volunteered for many school and community organizations. For her Make A Wish Grant she asked that a party be given for everyone in the community who helped her and her family during her cancer treatment. Mikaela was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age eleven.
Michael Warren, a graduate of Thunder Ridge High School in Highlands Ranch, CO, was awarded a one time grant of $2,500. He is attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO and will major in physical therapy. He was active in sports, played trombone and participate in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Michael was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a bone cancer, during his sophomore year. He had several surgeries, a knee replacement and countless hours of physical therapy.
Tony Hopp, a graduate of Humanex Academy in Englewood, CO, was awarded a one time grant of $2,500. Tony will be attending the Colorado School of mines in Golden, CO and will major in chemistry and physics. He was active in several school organizations and has won several awards in math and science. Tony was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a bone cancer, during his sophomore year in high school. He had major reconstructive surgery on his pelvis and 14 months of chemotherapy.
Thatcher Bean, a graduate of Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, CO, was awarded a one time grant of $1,000. He will be attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO and plans on pursue a career in medicine. He participated in lacrosse and cross country and volunteered with several non-profit organizations to help them with fundraising. Thatcher was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma when he was nine. He underwent surgery, ten spinal taps multiple hospitalizations and six months of chemotherapy.
Daniel Steefel, a graduate of Littleton High School in Littleton, CO, was awarded a one time grant of $1,000. He will be attending Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA and pursue a career in finance. Dan was valedictorian of his class and he also excelled in basketball and track. He as diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of ten.
Alejandro Veleze, a graduate of Rancho Bernado High School in San Diego, CA, was awarded a one time grant of $1,000. He will be attending the University of California, in Berkely, CA, majoring in marketing, and will be on the Tennis Team. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma during his sophomore year in high school.
Alexandra Anastasio, a graduate of Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, AZ. She will be attending the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ and plans on becoming a pediatric oncologist. She participated in many school organizations and worked on fundraising for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Alexandra was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in her junior year of high school.
